CGI is categorised by computer graphics, specifically 3D computer generation and special effects used most commonly to create computer games, films such as Avatar and adverts like Coca Cola (see link). Figures and realistic motion are created using key frame animation or motion capture in order to create the characters in a virtual world. Editors will use programmes such as Maya; a 3D animation software, Adobe AfterEffects and Adobe Premier to fully complete a CGI film.
Motion capture is usually where an actor will dress in a suit which is covered in reflective markers or sensors, located on vital joint areas; like this image of Andy Serkis, actor of Gollum from Lord of the Rings. The actor is videoed playing the character, from various angles and is then taken to a computer where an editor looks at the motion of all the markers and uses movements to programme sliders for the animation.
Key Frames on the other hand are a longer and more time consuming process. The editor will move sliders hand by hand to control the character frame by frame.
