Saul Bass was the designer who broke the tradition of paintings and photos used to advertise and replaced them with his new retro, jagged-edge prints and broken type. He is best known for his animated title sequence Vertigo by Alfred Hitchcock (see John Whitney) but has served as a title designer for other Hitchcock films such as North by Northwest, 1959 (link above) and storyboard preparation for Psycho, 1960.
Saul Bass has a very iconic style to his work, he uses fancy line work as graphic devices to shift and hold text within his short time frames.
